Classical Vocal Workshop

Who is this Program For?

The Virtual Classical Vocal Workshop is for students ages 14 - 18 focused on exploring the world of classical vocal music.

Description

Each participant will select a song from a provided list to spend the workshop learning. In this virtual classical vocal workshop, participants will gain knowledge through poetry, the composer’s intent and the musical elements that make up each song. Each student will have the opportunity to workshop and perform their piece in front of the teacher and peers. With the Classical Vocal Workshop, students will receive music, a practice track and a piano accompaniment track for the song they choose.

Dates & Times

Type: 2 week workshop

Frequency: Meets 2 times per week

Days: Tuesday & Thursday

Times: 9:30 am - 10:30 am

Classical vocal workshop Curriculum 

Day 1

  • Students will review the elements of music.
  • Students will learn the background of each song before selecting a song to workshop.
  • Students select a song of their choosing to workshop throughout the duration of classes.

Day 2

  • Begin the day with a poetry intensive to develop students' classical vocal music knowledge.
  • Students will workshop their chosen song and receive critiques from the teacher.

Day 3

  • Students will strengthen their understanding of classical vocal music through a composer and time period intensive.
  • Students will workshop their chosen song and receive teacher and peer critiques.

Day 4

  • Every student in the Classical Vocal Workshop will perform their chosen song.
  • Students and the teacher will discuss each performance.
  • Students will analyze how the knowledge gained throughout the workshop can be applied to other songs, both classical and non-classical.

    Minimum Students: 5 

    • Please note that CHMA charges a one time $25 registration fee for each individual program.

Meet Your TEACHER

Hannah Kauffmann is a classically trained soprano from St. Louis, Missouri. Kauffmann has sung with many companies including Chicago Summer Opera (Turn of the Screw, Riders to the Sea), Winter Opera of St. Louis (L’elisir d’amore, The Merry Widow, Carmen), Union Avenue Opera (Nabucco), and the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. One of her favorite roles she has performed is The Wardrobe in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast with Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville’s SummerFest . Kauffmann has taught privately and in the public sector since 2016. She holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education in Vocal and Instrumental music from Culver-Stockton College, and a Master of Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of Iowa.
