Musical Theater Vocal Workshop

WHO IS THIS PROGRAM FOR?

The Virtual Musical Theater Vocal Workshop is for students age 14 - 18 focused on exploring the world of contemporary musical theater.

Description

Each participant will get the opportunity to workshop a musical theatre song of their choosing within the given perimeters of each workshop session. Students will learn about acting choices, diction, belting (if applicable), stage presence, and audition etiquette.

Dates & Times

Type: 2 week workshop

Frequency: Meets 2 times per week

Days: Tuesday & Thursday

Times: 9:30 am - 10:30 am

Each session runs two-1.5 hour classes per week for a two-week period (total of 4 classes). Workshops are held Tuesday and Thursday @ 9:30 a.m. - 11 a.m. on Zoom. Contact us for exact dates.

Musical theater vocal workshop Curriculum 

Day 1

  • Students will begin the musical theater vocal workshop with introductions and icebreakers.
  • Students will introduce each chosen musical theater piece and its background.
  • Students will discuss the history, show and composers related to each chosen piece, strengthening awareness and understanding of musical theater pieces.
  • Students will develop their vocal skills through an introduction to the elements of music workshop.

Day 2

  • Students will expand their vocal abilities with regards to musical theater through a 30-minute technique workshop.
  • Students will receive individual workshop time with teachers to develop their chosen piece. 

Day 3

  • Students strengthen their vocal technique through a 30-minute belting workshop.
  • Students will receive individual workshop time with teachers to develop their chosen piece.

Day 4

  • Every student in the Musical Theater Vocal Workshop will perform their chosen song.
  • Students and teachers will discuss each performance.
  • Students will analyze how the knowledge gained throughout the workshop can be applied to varieties of other pieces.

Meet Your Teachers

Hannah Kauffmann is a classically trained soprano from St. Louis, Missouri. Kauffmann has sung with many companies including Chicago Summer Opera (Turn of the Screw, Riders to the Sea), Winter Opera of St. Louis (L’elisir d’amore, The Merry Widow, Carmen), Union Avenue Opera (Nabucco), and American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. One of her favorite roles she has performed is The Wardrobe in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast with Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville’s SummerFest . Kauffmann has been actively teaching both privately and in the public sector since 2016. She holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education in Vocal and Instrumental music from Culver-Stockton College, and a Master of Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of Iowa.

Ellie Banke is an aspiring artist and teacher located in Downers Grove. In the past few years, she was cast as the lead in the Illinois Allstate Musical, Big Fish (which performed on the national level), performed with the honors vocal jazz 12 group at ILMEA and has received awards for two different compositions at the ILMEA level. One of her most popular songs “928 Miles,” gained worldwide recognition and can be found on Spotify and various other streaming platforms.

Ellie strives to help her students gain confidence in whatever they’re doing- whether that be performing live, working on vocal technique or songwriting. She believes anyone can learn what they put their mind to with hard work and determination.
