WHO IS THIS PROGRAM FOR?

The Virtual Songwriting Camp is for students age 8 - 13 focused on expressing themselves through the art of songwriting and creating their own songs from scratch.

Description

Learn how to effectively structure a song and write catchy melodies while letting your inner creativity run wild. At the end of each songwriting camp program, every student will perform a song they have written over the duration of the class with guidance from the course instructor.

Dates & Times

Type: 1 Week Program

Frequency: Meets 5 Times Per Week Session

Days: Monday - Friday

Virtual Songwriting camp Curriculum 

Day 1

  • Introduction to class.
  • Students will learn about writing form and discuss how to identify different parts of a song.
  • Students will learn and practice effective usage of different rhyming patterns.
  • Students will be introduced to the class project: an original song written by each child over the duration of the class, and performed on the final day. Each child will have the choice of using a pre-recorded backing track, or the option to create their own track on their instrument of choice.

Day 2

  • Students will learn how to write effective melodies.
  • Students will develop their songwriting technique through an effective lyricism workshop.
  • Each student will be given time to write Verses 1 and 2 of their original songs, while utilizing the knowledge learned in the workshops.

Day 3

  • Students will continue to strengthen their songwriting skills through a workshop on writing an effective hook/chorus. 
  • Each student will write the pre-chorus and chorus for their original song, continuing to utilize prior workshop knowledge.

Day 4

  • Students will spend time learning techniques for writing an effective bridge.
  • Students will finish writing their original songs and receive time to workshop each song one-on-one with the instructor.

Day 5

  • Performance Day! Each child will perform/showcase their original song by performing live on Zoom or playing a pre-recorded version of their song for the class on Zoom.

Meet Your Teacher

Ellie Banke is an aspiring artist and teacher located in Downers Grove. In the past few years, she was cast as the lead in the Illinois Allstate Musical, Big Fish (which performed on the national level), performed with the honors vocal jazz 12 group at ILMEA and has received awards for two different compositions at the ILMEA level. One of her most popular songs “928 Miles,” gained worldwide recognition and can be found on Spotify and various other streaming platforms.

Ellie strives to help her students gain confidence in whatever they’re doing- whether that be performing live, working on vocal technique or songwriting. She believes anyone can learn what they put their mind to with hard work and determination.
